Dorothy Tuckerman was born on November 22, 1889, in Tuxedo Park in New York. Dorothy was the daughter of Paul Tuckerman, who was the descendant of Oliver Wolcott, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. At the age of 23, Dorothy would marry Dr. George nicknamed “Dan“ Draper. after getting married Dorothy and George would move to Manhattan in a gorgeous brownstone just around the corner from where the Roosevelts lived. WHICH BY THE WAY, Eleanor Roosevelt was Dorothy’s cousin and her childhood friend! With her renovated Brownstone as her calling card, in 1925, Dorothy would establish her company called "Architectural Clearinghouse" which would then become "Dorothy Draper & Company". Her company would be responsible for making a Hotel lobby a destination for more than just travelers to admirers. The Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia became the largest commission that any designer would ever receive. the Grand opening of the resort was a three-day affair with royalty and famous celebrities in attendance. Listeners, if you are ever in New York you can check out the Carlyle, and The Camelia house at the Drake Hotel in Chicago) but The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia is a hotel that is still pretty intact - in fact, her company still exists today and they come to make sure that it still looks as beautiful as it did at the beginning.
